River Cruise or Ocean Cruise? Let’s Settle It
Let’s settle one of the biggest cruise questions I get.
If you’ve ever said, “I think I want to try a cruise, but I’m not sure where to start,” this one’s for you. There’s no wrong answer , but there is a right fit. Let’s break it down. No fluff, no confusion. Just the real deal on what each experience is actually like.

River Cruises: Calm, Cultural, and Close to Shore
River cruises are basically a floating boutique hotel. No waves, no seasickness, and no need to dress up unless you want to. You glide past castles, vineyards, and sleepy villages, and dock right in the middle of town. Think of it like a curated, slow-travel European road trip , only with better wine and someone else doing the driving.
You won’t find casinos or poolside DJs here. Instead, expect cultural talks, walking tours with locals, fresh-baked bread in tiny towns, and maybe a little accordion music if you're lucky. You wake up in a new place almost every day, but there’s no rush. No crowding. No chaos.
Best for: Travelers who like exploring on foot, love history and food, want something peaceful and easy. Also great if you hate long bus rides.
Surprises people: The ships are sleek and modern. There’s no movement on the water either. The rivers are calm and glassy, so if you’re worried about motion sickness, don’t be. The food is really good. And you still unpack once but feel like you’ve had five vacations in one.

Ocean Cruises: Big, Bold, and Packed with Variety
Ocean cruises are for you if you want it all , entertainment, variety, lots of ports, and maybe a little bit of “just one more cocktail” energy. These ships are floating resorts. Think live music, comedy, multiple restaurants, spas, and deck chairs as far as the eye can see.
You might wake up in the Bahamas one day and Puerto Rico the next. Or explore the fjords of Norway, the coast of Alaska, or the Greek Isles. The Mediterranean? Gorgeous. Alaska in summer? Stunning. Ocean cruising gives you global variety, with your hotel following you from port to port.
There are more sea days, but that’s part of the fun. The ship is the experience. Lounge by the pool, catch a show, join a wine tasting, or just disappear with a book and do nothing at all.
Best for: Travelers who want flexibility, love a buzz of energy, or are traveling with a group where everyone wants something different. You can go full-throttle or low-key , your call.
Surprises people: It’s not all buffets and bingo anymore. The food can be fantastic, the cabins are super comfortable, and the service often feels more luxe than you’d expect.
Quick Cruise Comparison (No Sales Pitch, Just Facts)
Size: River = quiet boutique hotel vibe; Ocean = energetic resort feel
Entertainment: River = lectures, local performers; Ocean = big shows, live music, comedy
Docking: River = walk off the ship and you’re in town; Ocean = usually buses or transfers
Crowds: River = small groups, no lines; Ocean = more people, more variety
Packing list: River = layers and walking shoes; Ocean = swimsuits, layers, and cocktail outfits

Still not sure? Here’s my two cents:
If you’re the type who loves a cozy B&B and getting to know a place , go river. If you want lots of choices, scenic sailing, world-class views, and the freedom to be social or solo, go ocean.
The best cruise is the one that fits your energy, your style, and your goals for that trip. Want help narrowing it down? That’s literally what I do.
If I had to pick, I’m a river cruise gal when I want to slow down and reset , but nothing beats an ocean cruise for big wow views and a little buzz of adventure.
Let’s find your perfect fit. And then I’ll take care of the details so you can just enjoy the view.
